Come on You Aussies, Get in There!! Qualifying for the World Cup may be a defining moment for soccer in a nation which prefers three other football codes, the sport's top officials said. Planning for Australia's first World Cup in 32 years began today after yesterday's 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Uruguay secured a berth at the 2006 finals in Germany. The Socceroos made their only appearance in 1974. Playing at the 32-team showpiece will help soccer compete for fans and sponsors with Australian rules football, rugby league and rugby union, Football Federation Australia Chairman Frank Lowy said. One in six Australians tuned in to watch the penalty shootout, match broadcaster SBS said. Thousands of fans took to the streets in Sydney and Melbourne to celebrate. 0 Fancy Pitting Your Footballing Knowledge Against Mine? |
