A government-linked tabloid in Malaysia suspended an editor Tuesday following an uproar in the Muslim-majority country over his paper's weekend edition on sex.

The Malay Mail announced that Zulkifli Jalil was suspended starting Tuesday as part of an internal review by parent company New Straits Times Press Bhd. into a set of articles on sexual habits of citizens in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's largest city.

The government, through various holding companies, controls the New Straits Times Press Bhd. group of companies, which owns the English-language Malay Mail and its weekend version. About 60 percent of Malaysia's 26 million people are Muslims.

While the country is not ultraconservative and premarital or teenage sex is not uncommon, talking about it in public is still considered taboo.

The English-language tabloid had surveyed 100 people in the country's largest city, Kuala Lumpur, and its immediate vicinity to write an unusually frank article about the sexual habits of the city's youth in its "Let's Talk About Sex" series. It drew an immediate backlash from lawmakers.

The Malay Mail apologized Monday, calling the stories that appeared in its Nov. 4-5 edition "offensive and distasteful." Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak had said he received endless angry calls over the article, and said such stories could hurt the fabric of Malaysian society.

With the next general elections just under a year away, i'm getting increasingly unfazed with every passing day. There's gonna be no prizes for guessin where my first ever election vote's going to.
